Bill McGlone (Maryland) was selected with the first overall pick by the Ohio Machine in the MLL 2014 Supplementary Draft.
After much chatter of the possibility of the first women to play in the professional league, two-time Women’s World Cup Champion Goaltender Devon Wills was not taken in the draft.
New York once again made some bold trades during the off-season. Coach Spallina’s team acquired all-star long pole Kyle Hartzell from the Machine in exchange for midfielder Kevin Cooper and FOGO Matt Dolente, as well as the 13th overall pick in the upcoming collegiate draft. The Lizards also swung Matt Gibson to Denver for Justin Turri.
“This trade allows us to address multiple areas of need on the roster heading into the Supplemental Draft,” said Machine President and GM John Algie in a news release. “We’ve added a young and athletic offensive midfielder in Kevin, a proven All-Star face-off specialist in Matt and a high pick in the upcoming collegiate draft. It is hard to let go of a player like Kyle who has played well for us these past two seasons but the Machine improved immensely at many positions today with this trade. We look forward to seeing Matt and Kevin on the field for the Machine in 2014.”
On top of adding McGlone at midfield, Ohio also took midfielders Max Van Bourgondien (Cornell), Bobby Eilers (Syracuse), Kevin Mack (Ohio State), and Bobby Tyler (UMass). Face—off specialist Bobby Dattilo (Hobart) will be a part of the Machine this summer. They added goaltenders Kyle Feeney (Bucknell) and Stefan Schroder (Ohio State). On defense, Dana Wilber (Drexel), Ryan Nizolek (Virginia), and Cody Solaja (Hofstra) reinforce the backfield. Meanwhile, Connor English (Cornell/Virginia) was the only attackman to join the team.
When New York was ready to draft, they bulked up on defensemen. They selected Brendan Buckley (Army) with their fourth overall pick and Tom Guadagnolo (Syracuse) with the 26th pick. Chris Passavia rejoined the Lizards with the 82nd overall pick, and Brett Moyer (Hofstra) was taken with the 58th pick of the draft. FOGO Jerry Ragonese (RIT) rejoins New York as well.With the 18th pick, midfielder Josh Offit (Duke) joined the squad while Vito DeMola (Adelphi) was reacquired with the 66th pick. In the 10th round, the Lizards selected Steven Dirks (Loyola).
Chesapeake locked up their goaltending by taking Tyler Fiorito (Princeton ’12) andT.C. DiBartolo (Mt. St. Mary’s ‘11) were selected 24th and 28th respectively. Both goaltenders were a part of the Bayhawks 2012 & 2013 championship teams. A notable player they took with the second overall pick was NLL standout midfielder Cameron Holding (Grand Valley State ’11). Joining him were Will Harrington (Towson ’10) at the 64th pick, Justin Smith (Salisbury ’05) with the 72nd pick, and Jovan Miller (Syracuse ’11) with the 80th pick. Up on attack, the team added Jack Forster (Penn State ‘13) at the 40th pick, Jordan McBride (Stony Brook ‘11) at the 88th pick, and Jimmy Dailey (Stevenson ‘11) at the 96th pick. On defense, Jon Hayes (Western New England ’08), Sam Ford (Brown ’13), and Anthony Santomo (UPenn ’13) head to the bay area with the 48th, 52nd, and 56th picks respectively.
“Although we weren’t able to get everyone back, we were pleasantly surprised to bring Tyler Fiorito, Andrew Sellers, Justin Smith, and Jimmy Daily back to our roster,” head coach Dave Cottle stated. “There were a lot of impact players in this Supplemental Draft which is unusual. We are excited to see how training camp turns out.”
Boston took attackmen Jack Rice (Villanova) in the first round, then Nick O’ Reilly (Virginia) in the fourth round, (Harvard/Duke), and Kyle Smith (UMass) in the sixth. Fellow UMass defender Tom Celentani joined him in the 7th round, as did defender Dan DiMaria (Harvard) in the fifth round. Midfielders Colin Fleming (UMass), Gerry Reilly (Georgetown), and Michael Maggio (Lasell) were taken in the 8th, 9th and 10th rounds respectively. Goaltender Eric Hagarty (Endicott College) and LSM Thomas Keith (Cornell) were the final two picks for the Cannons.
In Charlotte, their top selection with the 7th overall pick was close defenseman Jake Smith (UMass ’13). Joining him in the backfield is Dylan Ayers (St. John’s ’13) with the 55th pick, Kyle Miller (Johns Hopkins ’07) with the 95th pick, and goaltenders Mike Gabel (Vermont ’05) with the 11th overall pick and Pierce Bassett (Johns Hopkins ’13) with the 47th pick. The Hounds went four straight picks selecting midfielders Davis Butts (Loyola ’13), David Emala (North Carolina ’13), Michael Noone (Lehigh ’13) and Anthony Biscardi (UMass ’12) with the 15th, 23rd, 31st, and 33rd picks respectively. They also added short stick defender Peter Mezzanotte (Towson ’11) with the 71st pick and Division III Limestone product Zach Cummings at 87th overall. Attackmen Dean Gibbons (Harvord ’11), Joseph Lustgarden (UMBC ’13) and Tom Harris (Hartford ’08) were taken with the 39th, 63rd, and 79th selections.
The new Florida Launch added some notable players. Attackmen Billy Eisenreich (Bucknell), Grant Kaleikau (Delaware), Chazz Woodson (Brown), Zach Palmer (Johns Hopkins) and Mario Ventiquattro (Ohio State) reinforce the unit. Up top they added Brett Gerber (UMass), Kyle Wimer (UMBC), Chris Mattes (Rutgers), Trevor Timmerberg (Bellarmine), and Scott Kahoe (Syracuse). Rounding out on defense are Nick O’Hara (Duke) and Steven Panarelli (Syracuse).
Rochester took six midfielders in the draft: Stephen Ianzito (Syracuse), Dan Hardy (Syracuse), Luke Cometti (Syracuse), Ryan Clarke (Salisbury), Matt Casey (Ithaca) and Bryant Schmidt (Mount St. Mary’s). FOGO James Carroll (Colgate) was also a part of the draft class. Attacjmen Andrew Scalley (Mount St. Mary’s) and Jeff Fraccaaro (Princeton) were also selected. On defense, Clayton Del Prince (Brown) and goaltender Jason LaShomb (Mercyhurst) will join the unit.
Denver welcomed back long pole Ken Clausen (Virginia), along with former DIII defender of the year Matt Callahan (Tufts), returning defenders MJ Kiekebelt (RIT), Roger Ferguson (Brown), Ethan Vedder (Cornell), as well as goaltenders Andrew Wascavage (Towson) and Ben Brown (Whittier College). Attackmen Greg Rogowski (Merrimack), Chase Bailey (Bucknell), M and midfielders Landon Carr (Maryland), Sean Rogers (Notre Dame), and Steve Schoeffel (Duke) were the remaining picks.
