The defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks fall to an unimpressive 1-5 after losing in double overtime last night to the Rochester Rattlers (4-2) by an 8-7 score.
Rattler attackman Kevin Leveille ended the game four and a half minutes into the second overtime to seal the home team victory.
A slashing penalty on defenseman Michael Evans gave Rochester a power play and rookie attackman Myles Thompson made the extra pass to Leveille, who went one-on-one with goalie Kip Turner and ended the game with a sidearm bounce shot to the far corner.
This was Thompson’s first game since being eliminated from the NCAA tournament and since being announced co-winner of the Tewaaraton Award with his brother, Lyle.
“It was a hard-fought, grind-it-out type of game and we came up on the short end,” Chesapeake coach Dave Cottle said. “I thought we played really hard and battled from start to finish. We didn’t shoot well and that cost us.”
Led by goalie John Galloway with 21 saves, Rochester improves to 4-2 on the season with the home victory. Levelle also poured in a hat trick with his game-winning rip. With his game-winning goal, Levelle, a 10-year professional, became the all-time leading goal scorer in MLL history with 271, surpassing New York Lizards legend Tim Goattelmann.
The Bayhawks play next Saturday evening, June 14th at 7:30 pm against the Boston Cannons and Paul Rabil at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
