The Calgary Roughnecks picked up their first win of the 2013 season with a convincing 19-12 victory over the Colorado Mammoth.
The game was a rematch for these two teams. Last weekend the Mammoth beat the Roughnecks 13-12 in overtime. This time it was the Roughnecks’ turn to even the score.
After Colorado got out to a quick 4-0 lead, Calgary forward Sean Evans finally got the Riggers on the board with an unassisted goal. He would follow that up by figuring in six more Roughnecks goals in the first quarter, putting Calgary on top 7-4.
The second quarter was more of the same as Evans contributed to three more Roughnecks goals, giving him 10 points on the night and Calgary a 10-6 lead at the half.
Calgary continued to set the tone in the second half, extending the lead to as much as nine goals early in the fourth quarter and, along the way, Evans set a new Roughnecks record by picking up 12 points in a game.
Jeff Shattler added seven points in the Calgary win while Dane Dobbie and Scott Ranger chipped in six points each.
Gavin Prout led the way for the Mammoth with two goals and five assists.
Next up for the Roughnecks is a trip east to Philadelphia to take on the Wings on Sunday afternoon. The Wings are currently the lone undefeated team in the NLL, at 2-0, but face the Buffalo Bandits on Saturday night so there is a chance they will have lost their perfect record before they face off against Calgary.
