Last night Dave Cottle joined LaxWorm Radio on The Lacrosse Radio Network, and while he spoke about the Chesapeake Bayhawks 2012 championship and the upcoming 2013 season, he also talked about none other than Casey Powell.
Powell retired from MLL at the end of last season after not playing with Hamilton near the tail end of the season. He was drafted in the supplemental round by the Bayhawks despite this, creating rumors that he might not be officially retired from the league.
Commissioner David Gross said on LaxWorm Radio in August 2012 that Powell had been suspended for playing in a tournament during an MLL weekend. So it is presumed that Powell would miss those games if he came back.
“I don’t know if he’s retired” Cottle said last night. “What is he retired from? He’s playing indoor right now. He was upset he was suspended and has another two game suspension. He signed his contract. If you’re retired you probably don’t sign your contract.
“Sometimes you take picks for offense, and sometimes you do for defense. We wanted to make sure that if Casey Powell did play, Casey Powell is going to play for the Chesapeake Bayhawks and no one could get him halfway through the season like in 2011”
Cottle later asked if Powell is unlikely to play responded, “I didn’t say that. He signed his contract. So right now we’ve been talking and he hasn’t said yet and he hasn’t said no yet. Him being traded to Colorado [Mammoth, NLL] , I don’t know if that improved our chances or not. If Casey Powell plays this year, we own his rights”
