Duke is #5. Denver is #9. The Bloomberg Report states the two bring in comparable levels of revenue each year.
The Blue Devils are no strangers to the NCAA Final Four spotlight as they’ve been around lacrosse since it’s popularity began growing. Denver is making their third appearance in the program’s short history, hoping to awe the lacrosse world.
Duke overcame Johns Hopkins at the University of Delaware last week in perfect playing conditions 19-11. The officials seemed to be on Duke’s side in that bout and Hopkins suffered the ramifications by spending more than twice the amount of time in the penalty box. The Blue Devils took advantage of those opportunities to carry themselves above and beyond.
Myles Jones was on fire for Duke. The 6’4” 230 pound sophomore commands his team and carries their offensive communication. His efforts reflect in his statistics and the presence he brings to the team is unquestionably one of leadership, hard work and professionalism.
On the other side of the US sits the Denver Pioneers. I’ve mentioned time and again about the fast-track their program is on in terms of growth, success and attention. The Pioneers come to the Final Four after beating Drexel at University of Delaware last weekend 16-9.
Jeremy Noble comes out of Canada and brings much technique and insight to the team. Denver has created a roster overflowing with talent and have been working this season to bring those teammates together on the field under a central system. Coach Bill Tierney stated following last week’s victory, “The third quarter was probably our best quarter all season.” With that, I believe he has higher hopes for his young program, especially going up against Duke.
These two teams have met seven previous times in their histories, once previously this season (Duke won 14-10) and both come into the game tomorrow with 15 wins this season.
It’s all been stated before what the expectations of these two are for tomorrow. The winner will move on to one of the largest stages lacrosse has to offer: the NCAA Championship. The loser will head to the airport for what will be a long, solemn flight home.
