Mixed in with all of the action over the last week were some outstanding individual performances. Those individuals will be recognized in this space each week as the D3 Players of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week – Grant Ferguson, Eastern
The Eagles junior sharpshooter was just that this week, playing a big role in Eastern’s 2-0 start. Ferguson scored nine goals on 12 shots in the first game, a 17-12 win over Greensboro on Wednesday, then followed that up by scoring five on six shots in a 12-5 win over Swarthmore on Saturday. All told, Ferguson already has 14 goals on the young season and has only missed the net four times. Ferguson racked up 54 goals and 18 assists in 2013 and is already well on his way to passing that point total in 2014.
Defensive Player of the Week – Derek Digiovanni, Marymount
Seeing 20 saves in lacrosse is a bit like seeing 40 saves in hockey – it’s just rare enough that it leaps off the box score every time you see it. Marymount’s Derek Digiovanni put up a staggering 24 saves against Catholic on Wednesday, but more importantly he gave up just seven goals in the Saints’ 9-7 win. That’s a save percentage of 77.4. Even after giving up 14 goals on 23 shots in the weekend tilt with Division II UDC, Digiovanni’s save percentage still stands at 61.1 percent. Not a bad week.
