It’s what every Junior B lacrosse team in Canada sets their eyes on at the beginning of every season. All the blood and sweat poured on to the floor for one final piece of hardware. We are finally here, the 2012 Founders Cup.
The Junior B championships get under way today with Team Quebec taking on the Saskatchewan Swat at 9:00am EST.
Opening ceremonies will officially kick off the tournament and will be followed by the BC provincial champions Kamloops Venom taking on the host and Ontario champions, Six Nation Rebels at 8pm EST.
The other participating teams are from the Alberta provincial champions Calgary Mountaineers, from the ILA the Onondaga Redhawks, Team Novia Scotia and the OJBLL runner ups Akwesasne Indians.
The favorites heading into the National Championship the obvious favorites of the tournament are the Rebels. Six Nations arethe Ontario champions; which they beat Akwesasne in three straight games and also will be playing on their own floor. The Rebels have already won the OJBLL championship in memory of their fallen brother Carney Johnson and they will continue to fight for a Founders Cup victory for him.
Although Akwesasne had a quick exit in the Ontario finals, the Indians will be looking to spoil the party and capturing the Founders Cup on the home floor of the Rebels.
There is no denying that the Indians have a very skilled team. The Indians have the ability to put the ball in the net consistantly with skilled offensive players Ty Thompson, Hank Delisle, Ky Tarbell and Derek Hopps.
The combination solid defense, a quick transition and outstanding goaltending from Jake Lazore makes a great recipe for keeping big numbers off the scoreboard.
Championship day will be this Sunday August 19th with the Tier II Trophy game at 11pm, the Bronze Medal game at 2pm and much anticipated the Founders Cup finals at 5pm.
All of the games will be played at the beautiful Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, ON.
If your schedule is empty, make sure to make it over to the ILA as the 2012 Founders Cup Tournament will be worth the price of admission.
