Goaltender Pierce Bassett also made 16 saves and allowed just eight goals from Virginia. For the Cavs, Mark Cockerton picked up four goals and Charlie Streep two while Nick O’Reilly had two assists.
There was no scoring for over six minutes before Brandon Benn found the back of the net. Virginia scored once from Cockerton in the first but then the Jays would score seven straight to lead 9-1 at the half.
Hopkins scored two more to start the third quarter for their ninth straight before O’Reilly scored for the Cavs to end their scoring drought at 31 minutes.
Virginia outscored Hopkins in the second half 7-6, but it wasn’t enough after the nine straight from the Blue Jays earlier in the game. The Jays now move to 6-2 on the season while Virginia falls to 5-4 and last in the ACC.
