Lakers Defeat Adanacs 6-5 Behind Big Night From Lewis

Last night the Burnaby Lakers faced off against the Coquitlam Adanacs. Burnaby were looking for a win to rebound from their loss against Langley on Friday night while Coquitlam was looking to rebound from a loss of their own.

Burnaby started off the game strong as Dane Stevens drew first blood, scoring six minutes into the first period and giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The Adanacs would add to their problems as Brett Hickey got sent to the penalty box for cross checking which lead to a Burnaby power play. On the power play Tyler Digby found the back of the net for the Lakers making it 2-0 for the Lakers. Late in the first Burnaby become unglued undisciplined as they took three consecutive penalties. The Adanacs would capitalize on two of the power plays as Brett Hickey and Scott Tinning scored to tie the game at 2-2. With three minutes left in the first Shaun Dhaliwal scored to put Burnaby in front 3-2 as the period came to an end.

In the second period Dhaliwal picked up right where he left off in the first as he buried his second goal of the night putting the Lakers in front 4-2. The Lakers would continue to put pressure on Coquitlam as they owned the second period. The Lakers picked up goals from Dane Stevens and Dhaliwal who completed his hat trick.  The Lakers led 6-2 until Coquitlam began to battle back in the second as Hickey scored to get his team back in the game. After two periods of play the Lakers found themselves in front 6-3.

In the third period the Adanac defense stepped up as they held the Lakers to just four shots in the period. Brett Hickey would score to cut the lead to 6-4. With just over five minutes left in the period Scott Tinning scored for the Adanacs to make it a one goal game. The Adanacs continued to pressure the Lakers but they could not find a way to tie the game as the Lakers held on for the 6-5 victory.

The Lakers won this game thanks to Dan Lewis who made 49 saves on the night including 17 in the third period alone as he stood on his head and preserved the win for the Lakers. Coquitlam just could not find a way to win tonight as they battled from behind all night and despite a great third period defensive effort and a three goal night from Hickey they could not get the win. With the win the Lakers improve to 3-1 and now sit in second place in the WLA.
