The Durham Turfdogs travel to Seymour Hannah Arena to open their season against the Niagara Lock Monsters (1-0), who opened their 2014 campaign with a convincing 16-8 victory against the Barrie Blizzard yesterday afternoon.
Halfway through the second half, the Lock Monsters were down but not out as they clawed themselves out of a 5-1 hole and scored 12 unanswered goals to take a 12-5 lead. The two clubs exchanged goals and Niagara took the victory to a score of 16-8. The dynamic duo of Andrew Potter and Corey Fowler continued where they left off last season. The St. Catharines hometown product Potter netted three goals and added a trio of helpers while Fowler found the back of the net twice and dished out three assists.
2013 Goaltender of the Year Connor Danko picked up the win for the Lock Monsters and looks to have picked up where he left off last year.
New TurfDogs general manager Dave Colbourne and his new coaching staff will look to pick up a win in their Canadian Lacrosse League debut.
Brad Levick and Mack O’Brien will be suiting up for their third CLax team in three years while NLL veteran Gavin Prout, Green Gaels Jr. B All-Time leading scorer Dylan Goddard and number 14 overall pick in the 2013 NLL draft pick Nick Diachenko will all make their CLax debut this afternoon (2/1).
The starting goaltending job for Durham is up for grabs as last year’s starter Zach Higgins is now playing for the Minnesota Swarm in the NLL. Kevin Croswell, John Chesebrough and Ryan Masters will all duke it out for the No. 1 job in Durham.
Since Danko started yesterday against Barrie, netminders Grant Crawley or Dave DiRuscio could possible get the start this afternoon.
