Major League Lacrosse sent an email to the media this morning about a press conference, and it was only a matter of time before we learned it was expansion. According to reports this morning and to ILWT sources, the league will announce an expansion team in Atlanta on Friday.
This week’s championship game between the New York Lizards and Rochester Rattlers will take place in Atlanta, just like last years game.
This will be the second pro lacrosse team Georgia adds this year after the NLL’s Minnesota Swarm moved to Gwinnett. Typically MLL has added two expansion teams at once, which means another shoe might drop soon.
Atlanta will be the third team in the south to join MLL. The Charlotte Hounds have been one of the success stories of expansion in the league, and the Florida Launch relocated from Ontario to Boca Raton before last season.
More to come as we hear more, but it sounds like 2016 will involve Atlanta.
