Tonight the Kentucky Stickhorses return home to play the Baltimore Bombers, and they look to come out with a vengeance. They are 1-2 on the season and have fallen to the Boston Rockhoppers twice, who defeated the Bombers 20-9 last week.
Baltimore hits the road for their first road game of the season and their first in Kentucky. They are without some key players including Shawn Nadeln, Damien Davis and Dan Marhol. Baltimore struggled last week even with those players in.
Meanwhile, Kentucky adds Jesse Guerin to their lineup and they will be without Mike McClellan for the first time all season. However, they also add Chazz Woodson to their lineup. Kentucky has struggled on offense, including scoring just nine goals against Boston two weeks ago.
Kentucky’s offensive problems can hardly be fixed by just adding new players, but the team practiced last week in an attempt to up their chemistry. Baltimore’s defense struggled against Boston, giving them open shooting lanes. If they allow that again, Kentucky will have to take advantage of it.
Ginny Capicchioni, the only bright spot for Baltimore last week, starts in net for the Bombers. She has had a fantastic season and will hope to take advantage of a Kentucky offense that has yet to come together.
Baltimore, despite losing offensive star Marhol, is led by Andrew Wasik and Devin Spilker, who each scored three times last week. Dan Deckelbaum should also get a bigger role offensively with Marhol and Davis out.
For the Stickhorses, the most interesting thing will be how many plays they have set for Woodson. Guerin is a pure box player so he should add some instant ability to that team, but what will Woodson, who has never played box before, do to contribute?
Game time is at 7pm tonight and the Stickhorses begin a vital weekend that could see them locked away in third place, or with a chance to move in the standings and grab some tiebreakers.
