The 2014 season of NCAA lacrosse commenced like no other in recent history. A number of games headed to overtimes, and a few were complete blowouts. Here are some quick recaps in case you missed the action:
Saturday
Michigan @ PSU
7 22
A blowout in Penn State’s favor on their home turf. Kaut performed outstandingly in goal, allowing only one of the seven total goals scored. He left the game in the third quarter.
Mount St Mary’s @ Maryland
3 16
At the end of the day, the Mount were entirely unprepared for the Terps. Freshman Matt Rambo repeated Terp history with a six-point debut (4 goals, 2 assists), a record not met since 2004. Senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuck scored four points (3 goals, 1 assist) and Junior attackman Jay Carlson contributed with a hat trick.
Jacksonville @ Duke
10 16
Veteran Casey Carroll (Defense) returned to the field for Duke after serving in the U.S. Army from 2007-12 and tearing his ACL in 2013. Jacksonville had the momentum on their side at the beginning, but were quickly shaken by Duke in the comeback.
Virginia @ Richmond
13 12
Richmond made their NCAA debut on Saturday and gave Virginia a run for their money. Richmond held the lead 9-8 at halftime. Taking the game into sudden death OT, Virginia was able to hang on for the ‘W.’
Delaware @ Bucknell
4 6
The all-around evenly-matched game was a battle between both teams. Delaware’s offense was persistent and relentless, while Bucknell’s defense held together as a unit to hold the opponents to four goals (three first half, one second half).
Marquette @ Lehigh
6 13
Marquette held their own for the first quarter of the game, keeping the game tied at two. Beginning with the second quarter the Hawks took off with offense, having 11 different players post points for the team. A true “team effort,” in my opinion.
Denver @ Air Force
14 8
Another powerful offensive surge aided the Pioneers with a number of players creating points and opportunities: Wesley Berg (5 goals), Jack Bobzien (6 points, 4 goals, 2 assists), Jeremy Noble (1 goal, 4 assists), and Zach Miller debuting as a freshman with three goals and one assist.
Sunday
Ohio State @ Johns Hopkins
9 10
A close game all the way, Hopkins out-paced Ohio, but the red and silver stayed consistent and as a unit. Game went into overtime; Hopkins came out victorious at home.
North Carolina @ Furman
19 3
There’s no other way to say it: The Tar Heels made their game look like a practice scrimmage. Fourteen different players on the Carolina team scored, and Furman will need to rethink some strategies.
The game to watch tonight:
Monday
Siena @ Syracuse
