Following numerous lacrosse leagues can be tough. That’s why I’m here to give a quick recap of what I considered the seven biggest games this weekend.
There would be eight, but you can find the recap to an exciting 3OT Lehigh victory in another article!
UMass – 12 / Ohio St. – 11 (OT)
Amongst many overtime games this weekend, UMass and Ohio State were very evenly matches opponents. UMass’ Joe Calvello won 19 of 27 faceoffs and scooped up 13 ground balls. Goalie Oliveri had 13 saves.
U. Albany – 16 / Syracuse – 17 (OT)
Syracuse returned a favor lingering from the 2013 season loss to Albany in overtime. Orange Attack/Midfielder Randy Staats had five goals and two assists. Albany had two different comebacks, one at the end of the first half and one in the fourth quarter [to take the game to OT]. Another evenly matched game: Albany had 48 S.O.G., ‘Cuse had 44 S.O.G.
Notre Dame – 19 / Jacksonville – 7
This was the first game since a 19-7 victory in 2009 that the Fighting Irish dumped 19 goals in one game. There is nothing more to be said here, other than ND walked all over Jacksonville and controlled the momentum from the very first face off.
Duke – 14 / Denver – 10
Going into the game, Duke head coach Danowski was concerned about Denver’s unique playing styles. He left a lot of the game up to the instincts of his players and it paid off. Duke players Dionne (one assist), Fowler (one goal, 16-of-27 face offs won) and Wolf (one goal and two assists) all had big days. Denver’s Noble (1 G, 2 A), Miller (4 G), and Berg (3 G) all had great performances, as well.
Georgetown – 9 / Navy – 8 (OT)
Hoya midfielder Tyler Knarr won 12 of 19 faces. Junior goaltender Jake Haley made 15 saves. Navy tied the score halfway through the second period, and played a tight game all-throughout.
UMBC – 3 / Maryland – 14
This game was a complete blowout. Senior Mike Chanenchuck had a career day with two goals and three assists. UMBC didn’t even score until 37 minutes into the game. Terps’ goaltender Nick Amato had nine saves of 30 total shots.
Loyola – 12 / PSU – 11 (OT)
Loyola showed the same inconsistencies as against Virginia. They allowed leads to slip away and PSU tied it up to force overtime. Loyola’s Nikki Pontrello scored the game winner 19 seconds into the extra play. Austin Kaut had six saves of 41 total shots. Joe Fletcher had a quiet day.
