It’s the NLL’s version of Hot Stove season (to use a baseball term), and that means general managers are as active as ever. Leading up to the draft in September, we will be discussing the off season with as many general managers as possible. First up is Buffalo bandits general manager Steve Dietrich.
Question: How did the Veltman signing come to fruition?
We wanted to add an impact left handed scorer coming in to the off season. We targeted both Pat Saunders and Daryl Veltman when free agency started and made strong plays for both. We had hoped to acquire both Pat and Daryl but we realistically figured New England would exercise their option and match the offer. We were very happy when Daryl chose to play in Buffalo.
Question: You attempted to sign Pat Saunders as well. Are you trying to add depth at the lefty forward position?
I wouldn’t say we are looking to add depth. We made plays for two lefts that I believe are impact players. I think we have built up and have solid depth on the left side.
Question: What went into the decision to franchise Billy Dee Smith?
We tried to sign Billy Dee to a multi year contract and tried right up until the final hour before franchising him. Billy is not only a very important piece to our D unit but also in the locker room. Billy has grown into a leader for us and we look forward to having Billy back both on and off the floor.
Question: You signed both Davide DiRuscio and Rance Vigneaux. Do you anticipate competition for the backup role?
I think competition is good and we want all our players to be fighting for jobs at camp. I believe in both Davide and Rance. I had the pleasure of having both goalies this summer. Davide was the M.V.P and backbone of our team in Kitchener and was the main reason we stayed in games most nights. When Rance had the opportunity he played very well also. I expect them to battle along with Anthony in camp to decide who the starter and backup will be.
Question: What did you see from Anthony Cosmo to give him a three year commitment?
I believe Anthony is still one of the best goalies in the game. He is a goalie that doesn’t rely strictly on reflexes but plays his angles, reads the play and the shooters well. That translates into him staying among the elite goaltenders for a longer period of time. With all that said we have two young guys that want his spot and will continue to battle with him going forward.
Question: Do you think with such a strong draft, some teams are waiting to make free agency moves?
Yes it is a very strong draft and teams believe they will be getting players that can make the roster right throughout this draft. I also believe that the salary cap may be playing a part as many teams are going to be close to the cap ceiling and are looking to the draft to fill different needs they may have.
Question: What are some more needs you will look to fill?
Right know I like the current makeup of our team. I believe we are going to get a good player at our #11 draft slot that will make our roster. We also have many younger players on our roster currently that have had very good summers and only continue to get better. I am looking forward to training camp already to see the battles that may occur.
