Rookie defenseman John Ranagan played his college lacrosse at John Hopkins University and was invited to Wings rookie/free agent camp in November. He made it through the camp and beat out some veterans to make the reduced 20 man active roster.
Ranagan was one of three rookie defensemen to make the team (Brian Megill & Mike Poppleton) and he is making his impact known. Ranagan stands at 6’3″ and weighs 218 lbs and he has started all five games so far this season compiling one goal and two assists and picking up 15 loose balls. Ranagan is making his mark not only for the Philadelphia Wings but also in the NLL as well. Every opposing player that comes into the zone, he is making sure they earn every inch on that floor. Not only is Ranagan big and strong, but he is a defenseman with speed and the ability to put the ball in the net
Ranagan was selected 17th overall in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft by the Rochester Rattlers. In his senior year at John Hopkins he played in 13 games, starting 10 of them compiling 14 goals and nine assists and picking up 18 loose balls. For the Rochester Rattlers the midfielder played 10 games and registered 18 goals and one assist.
Ranagan is only five games into his NLL career, and if he continues his strong play in the indoor game he could become a very tough defender not just this year, but in many years to come.
