If you play lacrosse, at any level, then you know the name Powell. How all three brothers, Casey, Ryan, and Mike grew up in New York and played at Syracuse University. That they participated for Team USA and were impacts in Major League Lacrosse.
Since his time in the MLL, Mike has now moved on to his music career after dominating at all levels of the lacrosse world, except the NLL, playing for the Bayhawks in 2006 and the Cannons in 2011, his only two years in the league. He is now an analyst for CBS Sports during NLL games, along with brother Casey. All while he gets back into the lacrosse swing of things, taking part in LXM Pro games.
Ryan made his way around lacrosse, playing for Rochester from 2001-2005, San Francisco in 2006 and 2007 and in his final season with the MLL, he dawned a Denver Outlaws jersey for one season in 2008. During his time in the NLL, Ryan played for Buffalo in 2001, 2002, and 2004, Anaheim in 2005, Portland from 2006-2009 and ended his career in 2010 with Edmonton. In 2005, he founded Rhino Lacrosse in Oregon, giving the west coast a huge jump start to producing lacrosse products.
Casey is the oldest of the three and is still playing lacrosse at a top level. He has played in both MLL and NLL leagues for many seasons. After Syracuse, he was drafted by the Rochester Knighthawks in 1999 and stayed until 2000. He was then traded to Anaheim in 2004 and 2005, joined the New York Titans in 2007 until their operations were disbanded after 2009 and were moved to Orlando in 2010 and joined the Boston Blazers in 2011. Currently, he is a member of the Colorado Mammoth along with veteran John grant Jr. Starting in 2001, Casey was drafted by then Long Island Lizards, where he played from 2001-2002 and strapped on a Rochester helmet in 2003 and helped them win their first ever MLL championship in 2008. Rochester dissolved after 2008 and was formed into the Toronto Nationals for the 2009 season, where the Powell’s sat out. Casey returned to the mLL in 2010 and played for now Hamilton Nationals and supposedly retired from the MLL after the 2012 season. Despite claims of retirement, the Bayhawks organization decided to draft CP in the supplemental draft and awaited his debut which happened in last nights overtime victory over the Boston Cannons. He recorded three goals and an assist, stating that he is still a top tier player in the lacrosse world.
His presence on the lacrosse field makes defense quiver. There is no other person that knows the game better than Casey. Vision, lacrosse I.Q., stick work, everything you want in a player is inside of this 37 year old man. The fact that he tallied four points in his first game in the 2013 MLL season just goes to show how dominant he really is. With his skills, he gives Chesapeake a huge advantage. Not only can Matt Mackrides go back to the midfield and use his speed to dodge from anywhere on the field, but powell also gives them another weapon at attack with him joining John grant Jr, one of the best players in the world. casey can see plays unfolding before they even happen. He makes passes and takes shots that no one else could see. His veteran presence will make the younger players that much better. He knows the league better than anyone else on the field and what to do in crunch time. It also gives Chesapeake another coach on the field to go along with Dave Cottle. Sure, he’s one of the older players in the league, but he can still move and that’s what makes him most dangerous, as he can fit into any system and play with anyone. This gives Coach Cottle a new opportunity to change some things up and give other teams headaches and throw off their defensive game plans. The Bayhawk offense is more dangerous than they were at the start of the 2013 season.
