Toronto Rock Owner, President & GM Jamie Dawick announced today the signing of Sandy Chapman to a 2-year contract. The veteran defender’s new pact will keep him in a Rock uniform through the 2017 season.
In addition to Chapman, Dawick also re-signed forwards Brandon Benn and Jordan Robertson, defencemen Glen Bryan and Scott Johnston all to 1-year agreements. All 5 player’s contracts are pending league approval.
Chapman is a veteran of 13 NLL seasons, has been named the NLL’s Defender of the Year (2010) and has won 5 NLL Champion’s Cups, four of which came with the Rock.
“Sandy is one of the key parts of our leadership group, especially on the defensive side of the ball,” explained Dawick. “At 34-years old, he’s still one of the hardest and smartest workers in our locker room and sets the example we want the younger guys to follow.”
Benn (4th round, 33rd overall) and Robertson (5th round, 43rd overall) were each later round selections of the Rock in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft. Both players spent the majority of the 2015 season on the Rock’s practice roster but will come to camp with a year of experience under their belts as they both push for an active roster spot.
Bryan was originally selected by the Rock in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft. After playing two seasons in Toronto and winning a championship in 2011, the Orangeville, Ontario native was dealt to Buffalo and played 2 seasons (2013 and 2014) for the Bandits. Prior to last season, the 26-year old was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Rock.
26-year old Johnston is coming off a torn ACL, which he suffered during the 2015 NLL season. Rehabilitation is going well and he expects to be ready to compete near the beginning of training camp in December. The gritty defender established himself as a dependable option in the faceoff circle last season prior to being injured.
