Last week we made the long trip down to Salamanca, NY to play against the Allegany Arrows at the gorgeous Seneca Allegany Community Centre. This is a top of the line facility complete with a basketball court, swimming pool, splash pad, sports field, weight room, and a lacrosse floor of course. This place is always lots of fun to visit and play in so needless to say we were all pumped to make the trip. We left Six Nations around 1 pm and made a quick stop at the border to take advantage of a few fantastic deals on beverages we could not pass up on before crossing into the USA and continuing the trip.
We arrived at the Seneca Allegany Casino around 4:30 pm which is only five minutes from the arena we were playing at. This place is another top of the line casino/resort that we were lucky enough to stay at overnight last year, and it did not disappoint. It is a must visit if your ever in the area and are feeling lucky or feel like getting rowdy for the night.
Anyways, after an hour of time spent at the casino we crossed the street and went to the rink to start getting ready for our game. We were short a few players for various reasons, but it did not matter in the end as we controlled the game and went up early and never relinquished the lead as we pulled off a 17-9 victory on the road to keep us on tied with Newtown and Onondaga for top spot in the league. Once the game was over we got showered up quickly to head outside and start consuming the many beverages we couldn’t pass up on at the border before the long bus ride home.
It was another good weekend for our squad as we keep coming together and pushing each other to play harder and faster each game and practice. Next weekend we have a tough doubleheader as we head back to Cattaraugus to play the Pinewoods Smoke on the road Saturday, then immediately return home to play the always competitive Tuscarora Tomahawks Sunday afternoon in what will be a big game for both teams. As an interesting side note, after Sundays game the Six Nations Slash boys will be competing in a fundraiser chilli cook-off after the game in what will surely be some fierce internal competition and huge bragging rights on the line in the dressing room for years to come. The chilli will be spicy and the chirping will be fierce as we all will be playing for the name on the back of the jersey instead of the one on the front for this one.
That’s all for now, I’m off to the grandmothers house to pick up her secret family recipe for some of the best chilli around. This is one competition I’m not losing.
Cheers, Speck
