For the lesser known pro leagues, it can be an uphill battle for new franchises. It can be difficult to gain traction in your new market without the level of media coverage afforded to the “Big Four” or major college teams.
Plus, often teams will take up residence in venues as a secondary tenant, negating many of the in-arena revenues generated. Issues like these were at the forefront of planning long before the Ohio Machine took the field for its expansion season in Major League Lacrosse(MLL) earlier this summer.
Looking to capitalize on a burgeoning lacrosse market, General Manager John Algie and his staff attempted to carve out a place for a pro team in Central Ohio, planting their stakes in historic Selby Stadium, on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio (30 minutes north of downtown Columbus).
