Last week the Stealth pulled of an upset by defeating the Champion Knighthawks. Last night the Stealth go into Colorado and defeat the Mammoth 17-13.
Lewis Ratcliff opened the scoring for the Stealth at the :33 second mark. Both teams alternated goals to tie the game at two a piece. Then the Stealth ( 4 goal run) and the Mammoth (3 goal run) have the score at 6-5 after the first quarter. The second quarter was much of the same with the Stealth outscoring the Mammoth 4-3 giving them a 10-8 halftime lead. Stealth lost defender Mike Grimes at 10:28 of the second as he received an instigator penalty for a fight with Mammoth forward Gavin Prout, as he ran into goaltender Nick Patterson.
As we started the third quarter Dean Hill scored a natural hat-trick for the Stealth, by scoring the first three of the teams’ six goals in the third quarter giving the Stealth a 16-8 lead. The fourth quarter had the Mammoth fighting back, drawing as close as 16-12 with 8:30, but that’s as close as they would get.
Stealth was again led by Cliff Smith with (4G/3A), Rhys Duch, Lewis Ratcliff and Dean Hill all netted hat tricks, and Athan Iannucci dished out 5 assists. 2012 MVP John Grant Jr led the way for the Mammoth with (3G/3A).
The big question coming into the start of this season for the Mammoth was the goaltending. Chris Levis started the game but was pulled with 7:17 to go in first half allowing 6 goals on 19 shots. Goaltender Matt Roik didn’t fair any better.
Both teams are back in action next week. The Mammoth travel to Calgary for a 9pm(eastern)game , and the Stealth return home for a 6pm(eastern) start vs Edmonton
