On Sunday, the Syracuse lacrosse team got a preview of what to expect from their 2014 team as they participated in scrimmages with the Israeli and Iroquois national teams.
Originally, the Orange were not slated to participate in the scrimmages as Cornell was supposed to take part on Sunday. However, Syracuse replaced Cornell after the hazing allegations canceled Cornell’s fall ball season.
The first opponent Syracuse faced was the Israeli national team. Syracuse also had a scrimmage against Iroquois soon after and head coach John Desko used the first game to get a look at a lot of players who have been with Syracuse for some time but haven’t seen much action on the field. Desko also got an extended look at newcomers such as Inside Lacrosse’s No. 1 ranked recruit Jordan Evans.
Even with the less-experienced players, Syracuse handled Israel by a score of 12-3. The game was played with two 20-minute halves and a running clock.
The standout players for Syracuse were freshman Dylan Maltz, the younger brother of senior attackman Derek Maltz. Maltz was one of three players to record three points on the day as redshirt freshman Dylan Donahue and redshirt sophomore Kyle Henry were the others.
Redshirt sophomore Eric DeJohn, senior Pat Powderly and sophomore Derek DeJoe all chipped in with two points in the victory as well.
Meanwhile in cage, redshirt sophomore Ben Romagnoli and sophomore Tyler Avallone split halves and each recorded two saves in the victory.
