After struggling for most of the season last year, the Nanaimo Timbermen have done their best to right the ship early in the off season.
The T-Men trade their 2015 first round draft pick (First overall) and the playing rights to Kody TeKanawa to the Coquitlam Adanac’s.
Going the other way is:
- A 2015 first and second round draft picks (2nd & 9th overall)
- A 2016 third round draft pick
- A 2017 1st round draft pick
- Playing rights to Brett Hickey
Now, this all hinges on Brett Hickey agreeing to play for the T-Men in the 2015 season, if he doesn’t then Coquitlam gives up their second round draft pick in 2017.
What does this mean you ask? Well, to start the T-Men who went 4-13-1 last year and scored a league low of only 131 goals compared to the top scoring team in the league and eventual WLA champion Victoria’s 176, this instantly puts a top scorer in their lineup.
Brett Hickey finished the season last year as the Adanac’s top scorer finishing the season with an impressive 62 points (26G, 36A), he also finished last season as the fourth highest points in the WLA behind only Alex Turner, Corey Small and Rhys Duch.
To put 62 points into perspective, Nanaimo’s two top scorers last year only combined for a total of 79 points together with strong seasons from Mac Johnston and Paul Brebber putting this kind of player opens up the offence even more for head coach Kaleb Toth to put out more looks for opposing defence’s and turn this proud franchise around.
With the WLA season still a long ways away, clearly the T-Men want to forget what happened last year and look forward to a strong 2015 showing and making a big splash like this is a great way to start.
