This past Friday night the Voyageurs swept the series against a very tough and competitive team in the Montreal Phoenix. After playing a very difficult first game in Montreal with only 11 runners on a Tuesday night and managing to get away with a 13-12 win, we were back in Essex with a much deeper bench but with a bigger challenge as well. Our coach warned everyone that the swept game at home is the most difficult game to win in any series. When you need double overtime to win a 10-9 game in box lacrosse I think it’s safe to say that both teams came prepared and ready to play.
It was a very fast paced game with both teams being athletic and well coached. The strength of our team is conditioning and I think that in the end it might have made the difference. Greg Rogowski managed to score the golden goal after scoring 3 during regulation. Brendan Dube came out firing with three goals and Dan Deckelbaum transformed into a playmaker with 1 goal and 3 assists. Even though my teammates gave me credit for playing well in net I have to say that they made my job much easier by picking up the loose balls and just making overall smart and effective decisions. Our defensive squad played very well and kept the game in our reach the entire time.
We are now preparing for our biggest challenge so far this summer. The final series against the Kahnawake Mohawks is going to be a good one. Both teams split during the regular season with the overall goal for and against being 48-49 favoring Kahnawake. Both teams have deep squads with top scorers, defenders and goaltenders. With the series being a best of 5, I think the mental aspect will also be important.
The first game will be held Saturday August 4th in Kahnawake. I bet the crowd will be into this one!
Go Voyageurs!
