The first week of the 2014 Division III lacrosse season is in the books, and while many teams are yet to play their first game we have already been treated to some instant classics. Overtime games, comebacks, overtime games that were the result of comebacks — the whole nine yards. Mixed in with the all of these games were some great individual performances that we will recognize in this space every week with our D3 Lax Blog Players of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week – Joe Wood, Washington & Lee
Wood had himself a great opening week in leading the Generals to a 2-0 start, notching wins over Ferrum and Christopher Newport. The senior midfielder scored five goals and added a pair of assists in the two games and sits in a tie atop the team in points with seven. Four of those goals, and one of the assists, came against Christopher Newport.
Honorable Mentions: Cam Lewis, W&L; Joe Balestrieri, Stevenson; Greg Korvin, Salisbury
Defensive Player of the Week – Zeke Smith, Salisbury
Salisbury’s Smith forced seven turnovers and picked up seven groundballs in the Sea Gulls’ two wins this week, but none were bigger than the turnover/groundball combo that led to Salisbury’s game-winning possession in its overtime victory against Lynchburg on the weekend. Smith’s takeway led to Greg Korvin’s third and final goal, saving Salisbury from falling in its second game of the season. Smith also added a goal against Greensboro.
Honorable Mentions: Conor O’Toole, W&L; Tracy Armstrong Greensboro; Damian Pulos, Ferrum
