With only two games this past weekend, you would think picking three stars would be easy… WRONG! We had some great performances again. Players performing as expected, along with a performance to really build up the confidence.
Week 10 Three Stars
1—Rob Hellyer (Tor—3G/8A) Hellyer figured in on 11 of the teams 17 goals as the Rock won 17-9 over Colorado. Hellyer ranks in the Top 5 in goals, assists, and overall points with 26 goals (fourth), 45 assists (second), 71 points (first). Hellyer is one of the main reasons Toronto is 9-1, and has to be mentioned right now as a top player for the MVP of the league.
2—Shawn Evans (Cal—2G/6A) Assisted on the game winner in overtime. Evans did more than just what the stat sheet says. Evans was the major focus in the Roughnecks OT win 12-11, and of the Edmonton defense. Each time Evans stepped on the floor and had the ball the defense was drawn to him, sometimes forcing the defense to double team him, which caused other players to be open and score the goal.
3(tie)—Stephan Leblanc (Tor—4G/4A) Leblanc had eight points, including the game winning goal. Leblanc is another major cog in the Rock offense. Leblanc is eighth overall with 23 goals, and fifth overall in assists (33) and points (56).
3(tie) Mike Poulin (Cal) Stopped 41/51 shots. After being dropped to the number two man between the pipes, Poulin has been playing strong the last two games. This week Poulin started slow and was replaced briefly after being rattled at the start. But once placed back between the pipes the Poulin Wall started to form again. Edmonton had plenty of chances to extend and win the game, but the netminder had a different ending.
Honorable Mention:
Calgary: Daryl Veltman (4G/1A) Scored game winner in overtime for the teams second victory. Curtis Dickson (3G/1A) Key goals to stop an Edmonton run and also start a Roughneck run.
Edmonton: Robert Church (3G/2A), Mark Matthews (2G/5A), Zack Greer (3G/2A) combined for 8 of the teams 11 goals. Greer’s third goal tied the game on a penalty shot with :15 left. Aaron Bold stopped 36/48 and also made some key stops in an up and back game.
Toronto: Brett Hickey (3G), Rock defense for shutting down the Mammoth offense and only allowing Westervelt/Grant Jr., /Jones a total of 2 goals, both by Jones. Nick Rose stopping 46/55 shots faced, 29 of the shots came from the names above only allowing 2 of them to get passed him.
