WLA: New Westminster Beats Maple Ridge 11-8

The New Westminster Salmonbellies overcame the Maple Ridge Burrards by an 11-8 score on Sunday. The win improves the Salmonbellies to 2-1 on the season while the Burrards drop to 2-2.

Maple Ridge jumped out to the early lead on goals from Nick Stone and Ben McIntosh before New Westminster finally got rolling, answering with a three-goal run of their own, with Logan Schuss, Jesse Fehr and Jordan McBride answering for the Salmonbellies. Stone would tie the game at 3-3 at the 9:35 mark, but the Salmonbellies would then go on their second three-goal run of the game to extend the lead.

In the second period the Burrards would slowly battle back, eventually knotting the score at 8-8 late in the frame, but the third period was all Salmonbellies as Jeff Cornwall scored a natural hat trick to put the game out of reach.

Schuss (2 G, 2A), Cornwall (4 G) and Richard Lachlan (1 G, 3 A) all contributed four points to the Salmonbellies attack while Andrew Murphy (1 G, 3 A) and Jarrett Davis (1 G, 3 A) paced the Burrards.

Alexis Buque got the start in net for the Salmonbellies and stopped 33 shots for the win. Chris Levis made 34 saves for the Burrards.

New Westminster next hosts the Victoria Shamrocks on Thursday, June 5 while Maple Ridge faces those same Shamrocks on Friday, June 6 in Victoria.
