New Zealand and Russia Playing Debuts Like Veterans

These two newcomers to the international lacrosse scene are no less prepared or conditioned for a big fight down a long road. Being less affiliated with lacrosse than the ‘blue group’ (USA, Canada, Japan, etc.) means a longer journey to a potential championship; much more exciting also.

THE TEAMS

New Zealand is a team based around brotherhood and team work. The players have a pre game ritual performing a war dance that is meant to mentally prepare a soldier or group of for battle.

This small island hosts a lifestyle similar to Australia, but never mistake one for the other (I hear some get offended). They play rough sports, live ‘rough’ lifestyles, love the outdoors and have a respect for all life.

Russia has a history of building strong citizens. The country, which was pushed and shoved around by others throughout its time, has focused on creating a central sense of nationalism and pride in their own.

Taking up some of the most territory on a national scale is a preamble to the way Russia operates on a sporting front. Just like their Olympic appearances, this young and less-lacrosse-experienced team will make up for it in their efforts, love of home and as a solid unit.

THE GAME

Set to take place in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Complex, these two teams face off at noon Denver-time. (2pm US EST)

Russia has one previous MLL roster member in Will Koshansky who played for the Rochester Rattlers and University of Penn. His brother is also on the Russian roster after playing for Notre Dame in NCAA.

Both teams make up the rest of their rosters will players from NCAA D-III, MCLA, or Club teams. The difference is that Russia has some experience in the European lacrosse leagues, whereas New Zealand’s experiences lie in the Australian and Chinese tournaments. New Zealand, therefore, has plenty of team members without having to pull from America.

PREDICTION

This will be a scrappy game, but that’s the way I love them! More ground balls, body checking and stick swinging making for a rough and aggressive game.

I’m not sure how all these teams are reacting to the extra 20 minutes of game play in the FIL. It seems as though fourth quarters are much more paced, or a complete burst from one team.
