The Boston Cannons made a splash on Friday afternoon, acquiring Chesapeake Bayhawks goaltender Tyler Fiorito. Cannons starting goalie Jordan Burke retired last week, leaving Boston without any goaltenders with starting experience in Major League Lacrosse.
Going back to the Bayhawks is 2016 first round draft pick Greg Coholan, midfielder Tyler German, attack Ryan Young, and the 2017 first round draft pick of the Cannons. The Cannons also added a 2017 conditional supplemental draft pick.
“Over the past year we accumulated picks and assets from other deals that we always knew would allow us to make a significant move when needed,” said Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney via press release. “Today, we acquired arguably the best goalie in the league in Tyler Fiorito. We extended ourselves to put our team in position to make another championship run, while still having multiple first round draft picks next year.”
Fiorito was the Bayhawks starting goalie for all of 2015, finishing with a 60.6 save percentage. Playing for Princeton in college, he was an All-American four times. He started all 14 games with Chesapeake last season, and he led the league in saves.
Kip Turner is coming back for the Bayhawks, and it is presumed he will be the starting goalie, with former Maryland goalie Niko Amato as the backup. Boston was forced to give up a lot to add Fiorito because of the retirement of Burke, and Young is an attackman they may regret losing.
Both teams did well in this trade, with the Cannons filling a need and the Bayhawks doing what they always do in adding the best talent they can.
