Well, it’s the end of the Major League Lacrosse 2012 season, and it named a new MLL Champion. The Chesapeake Bayhawks took home their fourth Steinfeld Cup/Trophy. If you watched the game, you understand why I put the slash. But that is not why we are here.We are here to see who received my three stars from this weekend.
My first star goes to the MVP of MLL Championship Weekend, Ben Rubeor. He had not recorded a hat-trick ALL season and goes into championship weekend and records six goals in the first game against Boston to help the Bayhawks to the Championship game. Without his efforts, they may not have made it.
The second star is awarded to Chesapeake faceoff man Alex Smith. Although he had not played for nearly the entire 2012 season, he came into championship weekend ready to play. The Bayhawks used Adam Rand as their faceoff guy when Smith had to get surgery prior to the beginning of the season. Lots of questions were asked when Rand was scratched and Smith was added for this weekend. Coach Cottle must of had this planned the entire time, because Smith put on a show as if he had been playing all season. Going 33-53 (62%) in a weekend after not playing for months is wild.
Last, but not least, the final star goes to the Long Island Lizards. After losing two players in Max Quinzani and Rob Pannell to “other opportunities” and starting 0-2, the team over came those obstacle and made it all the way to Championship weekend. Joe Spallina, the rest of the coaching staff and the front office did an astonishing job turning the team around and bringing them to Boston. Not to forget that the players worked hard for their fans and coaches and it couldn’t of been done without them. It will be interesting to see what 2013 has in store for the Lizards and the hopeful addition of Pannell.
Honorable mentions go to Michael Evans for shutting down his man in both games, making it difficult for the opponents offense to get anything going. Also, to Kip Turner, for overcoming the pressure of playing his former team, Boston, and holding the highly powered Denver offense to only 6 goals.
