The Guelph Gryphons and Trent Excalibur opened up the 2012 Baggataway Cup weekend last night in Peterborough, Ontario. The Gryphons hopped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter and it was all Gryphs from then on. Trent would try to bring the game closer but the effort was not enough to catch the high powered Gryphons. Scoring champion Mike Burke buried four goals, tallied three assists for seven points. Senior Connor Deuchars found the back of the net three times and added two helpers for a solid five point night. Former Adrian College Bulldog Tyler Tanquay and Jordan Hill each netted a hatrick while leading the way for the Excalibur. Nabbing game MVP honors for the Gryphons were Jordan Critch for outstanding two way play while scoring a goal and an assist. MVP honors for the host Trent was netminder Kalvin Thomas who was outstanding in between the pipes for the Excalibur despite allowing 15 goals. Without Thomas’ play, the score could have been worse. The Gryphons will take on the McGill Redmen at 1:00 p.m. today(Saturday) in the semi finals.
Brock 12 Bishops 9
The 2011 Baggataway cup finals rematch took place last night in the second round of CUFLA championships as the Brock Badgers took on the Bishops Gaiters. Both teams were hungry coming into the contest to prove their record did not reflect the team they were. The Badgers dominated the Gaiters in the first half with a score of 5-2 in the first quarter and 8-3 in the second. Early into the fourth quarter the Badgers had a convincing 11-6 lead over the defending CUFLA champions but the Gaiters made a charge back with three goals to bring the game to 11-9. Senior Jordan Weedmark put the nail in the coffin with a unassisted marker with 14 seconds remaining in the game to secure the victory for the Badgers and to send the Gaiters packing without repeating as champions. Leading the way for Brock was veteran Jordan Weedmark who netted four goals and added two helpers for six points. Sophomore Greg Davidson added an impressive five goals in the victory for the Badgers. Solid play from senior netminder Ian Duffy alongside outstanding play from close defenders Steve Priolo, Brad Baker and Justin Pychel. Leading the way for the Gaiters was senior Joseph Laleune tallied two goals and an assist. Game MVP honors went to Weedmark for his outstanding offensive play for the Badgers and senior Brett Conway for his play at midfield while finding the back of the net twice. The Badgers will head on to the next round to gain vengeance on the team who beat the Badgers twice this season, the Western Mustangs. The second semi final matchup will take place at 3:00 p.m.
