On Thursday, we previewed the Ales Hrebesky tournament and predicted the Kahnawake Tomahawks to be one of the best teams in the field. Yesterday, as the team traveled to the airport in Montreal to head to the Czech Republic, they found out they would not be attending the event.
Several players arrived at the airport yesterday for a 1:30 pm flight to find out that the flight had not been paid for and team manager Kevin Biggs was allegedly no where to be found, according to tournament directors, and no one has heard from him since, according to sources close to the situation.
According to the Ales Hrebesky website:
In group F there will remain only two teams: Nova Scotia Privateers and LCC Wolves who will match twice. The winner will be seeded as F1 to the play-off system. The loser will get among other teams on the third places in round-robin groups from which the best three according to points, score differential and scored goals will go to top sixteen. The best of these teams (T14) will be seeded as original F2. Last four teams from third places (T17–T20) will match each other in the Z group. Check the updated schedule http://www.ahmemorial.cz/en/2014-1/programme-2/. The first three games on Wednesday start later.
According to information from several Kahnawake Tomahawks players the team met at the airport for departure to Prague but their manager Kevin Biggs did not show up. It was found that the flight tickets for the team were not paid. Kevin Biggs does not communicate.
We have spoken with several Tomahawks players who have said the same, that they arrived with tickets unpaid for. Since then, it has been said that the National Lacrosse League is aware of the situation. Biggs is a referee in the NLL.
The Tomahawks were set to be a team in the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League Sr B team this season. It has not yet been said if the team will still be in the league, and we are awaiting to hear back from QSLL officials regarding this.
We will continue to update this post with details as they emerge. Currently, not much is clear but the only thing for certain is that the Tomahawks will not play in the Ales Hrebesky tournament.
Update: The NLL sent us their official statement, saying:
“We became aware of certain allegations made against Kevin Biggs. Kevin has denied the allegations to the league. Kevin has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.”
