The University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team has promoted one coach and added two. Former All-American lacrosse player for the Terps, Ryan Moran, has been promoted to UMD’s first ever Associate head coach. He joined Maryland as an assistant coach in the fall of 2008, making this his fifth season with the Terps coaching staff.
Maryland has seen Moran help the Terps to a 2011 ACC Championship, four NCAA tournament showings and two back to back National Championship game appearances in 2011 and 2012. This is very impressive to have been done just in four years.
2012 and 2011 were great seasons for the Terps, unfortunately ending unfavorably. Maryland had not seen the championship game since 1998, losing to Princeton 15-5 and appearing in it 6 times prior to 1998. The last time they won the NCAA Championship was 1975, beating Navy 20-13. The last time the Terps won the ACC was in 2005, beating University of Pennsylvania 21-6.
Moran’s responsibilities, since 2008, have been to coach the face-off men, as well as handling the offense and recruiting. He will take on more duties as the associate head coach in the 2012-2013 season.
Coach Tillman and the Terps have also added two assistant coaches for the 2012-2013 in Brian Farrell and Kevin Conry.
Farrell, who will be a volunteer assistant, was an LSM for the Terps, helping them to the ACC Championship and NCAA Championship game in 2011. He was a three time All-American at Maryland and a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. Brian ended his career as the highest scoring defensive player in history for the Terps men’s lacrosse program, recording 49 points (29G, 20A), 168 groundballs and 82 caused turnovers. He currently is a member of the Boston Cannons of the MLL.
Coach Conry will be joining the Terrapin sideline as an assistant coach/defensive coordinator. This coming after former defensive coordinator coach Kevin Warne took the head coaching job at Georgetown.
Kevin served five years at Fairfield, where he was the associate head coach the past two years. He made a big u-turn with the Stags defense, who were ranked 39 before and ended top 16 in the nation the past three seasons. He will also help out as a recruiter with coach Moran.
Conry is a 2004 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, where he helped the Blue Jays to second place in 2003 NCAA Championship game. He spent 2007 at Penn State, where he recruited the fifth best 2008 freshman class, as ranked by Inside Lacrosse. The Nittany Lion’s ended 2007 as the 13th best ranked defense in the country.
The Maryland coaching staff has a lot to live up to after making the NCAA Championship game the past two seasons. Tillman and the Terps finished 2012 as the runner up and a 12-6 record. They lost Joe Cummings, Drew Snider and Michael Shakespeare to graduation, but return a slew of talent on both ends of the field.
