In this great article on CNN about Jake Steinfeld and Major League Lacrosse, there is a little tidbit to get MLL fans excited, at least if you want to see expansion.
This year two expansion teams debuted: the Charlotte Hounds and the Ohio Machine. The latter, in a June game against the Denver Outlaws, pulled a crowd of 30,128, the biggest in MLL history. And it will continue to expand: The MLL plans to add two more teams in Florida, Texas, or Atlanta by 2014. After that, it’s shooting for four new teams on the West Coast, which would bring the total to 14.
MLL commissioner David Gross has always talked about those markets for the league, so it’s not really a surprise, but this is the first confirmation we see that the league actually plans on having teams there.
Florida hosted the all star game this season, so we all knew they want to expand there. But wanting and planning are two different things. It says here they are planning for these teams, which is a huge step for expanding MLL throughout the country.
