Not since 1999 has professional box lacrosse been played in Baltimore. That changes this winter as the Baltimore Bombers help kick off the second season of the North American Lacrosse League. The Bombers pre-season roster is already in place and full of local Baltimoreans who have enjoyed major success at the college and professional levels. The team’s first picks were Mike Simon from Fallston HS, Stevenson University and Chesapeake Bayhawks, Dan Marohl from St. Mary’s, UMBC, Baltimore Bayhawks, Philadelphia Wings and Minnesota Swarm, Matt Alrich from Calvert Hall, Delaware, Baltimore Bayhawks, Philadelphia Wings and Captain of the USA box team, Damien Davis from Gilman, Princeton, Long Island Lizards and Portland Lumberjacks.
Other locals who were drafted include Hunter Lochte (Boy’s Latin, Towson), Jordon Kenny (Mt. St. Joe, Virginia Wesleyan), Ben Rubeor (Loyola, Virginia, Chesapeake Bayhawks), Travis Reed (Boy’s Latin, Maryland), Chris Boland (Boy’s Latin, Johns Hopkins, Boston Cannons), and Bryn Holmes (McDonough, Maryland). Dan Deckelbaum (Owings Mills, Delaware, Philadelphia Wings, Toronto Nationals) was on the teams Protected List.
Other players of note include Ian Dingman from Navy, who is playing competitive box lacrosse for the first time in his career, and 3 of the 4 coaches of the Towson University men’s lacrosse team- Head Coach Shawn Nadelin (Johns Hopkins, Baltimore Bayhawks, Philadelphia Wings, Team USA box and field), Dan Cocchi (Towson, Denver Outlaws) and Chad Weidmaier (Princeton, Toronto Nationals).
“Our first roster is deep in box lacrosse experience. I expect us to be competitive from day one”, said Hunter Francis, the team’s General Manager and Head Coach. “Many of these men have had distinguished careers and it will be a pleasure to watch them play on Sunday’s in Canton”.
The Bombers home opener is Sunday January 20, 2013 at 3pm at Duburns Arena in Canton. Ticket information will be forthcoming by mid-November.
