The Minnesota Swarm are getting ready to start their season after surprising most of the league last season. They took a very young roster and made it all the way to the Western Finals, something that no one outside of Minnesota expected.
Minnesota brings in four rookies in 2013; Brock Sorensen, Kiel Matisz, Shayne Jackson and Alex Crepisneck who were all first round draft picks. Sorensen starts the season on the PUP but when he returns he brings a big, physical body to their defense.
Meanwhile Matisz and Jackson will be on the offensive unit along with Callum Crawford and Ryan Benesch. Matisz is a big body who can score and will also be able to create space for the other scorers.
The defense has lost Richard Morgan and Joe Cinosky, but they added Sorensen and Crepisnek to replace them. Last season’s rookie stars Evan Kirk and Tyler Carlson are back in between the pipes, and they also have two goalies on the practice roster (Zach Higgins and Ryan Masters). Carlson struggled this summer so his season will be interesting to watch.
The transition game of the Swarm is one of the best in the league with Jordan MacIntosh and Andrew Suitor, both young players, and they also bring back youngster Corbyn Tao on offense who beat out Cody Jacobs on the roster.
The key to this team lays with the rookies; if Jackson and Matisz live up to their hype, that should be one strong offense. The injuries with Sorensen have to be a concern as well with his knee troubles in the past. If he can come over those they suddenly have a stud defender. If not, that defense could struggle.
The Swarm open up next Saturday against the Buffalo Bandits on the road.
