Onondaga Community College has won their seventh straight national title and tenth as a program. This is a team that has produced the likes of Cody Jamieson Sid Smith and the older Thompson brothers as well as many more amazing players. This year the team was led by its defensemen, Tyson Bell and Oakley Thomas, as well as young offensive players Brine Rice and Matthew Bennett who received MVP honors after the weekend.
OCC went down to Baltimore, the home of the Essex Knights, and took on Genesee Community College and the Lazars took down GCC 17-6 and beat them all three times they played this season including the Regional championships and the national Final Four.
On Sunday, Onondaga was to take on the hometown team Essex this would be the third time these teams would meet in the national championship going back to 2010 and 2011. Onondaga controlled the game from the start players such has Bennett had (3G, 1A) Rice (2G, 4A) also returning All American Parish Young had two goals. Nick Sawyer had two goals and is the youngest brother to Loyola alumni and current Charlotte Hounds players Mike and Matt Sawyer. Defender Tyson Bell also got a goal in the game while goalie Holden McDonald made thirteen saves.
On the face off x Sam Watts and Doug Jamieson controlled it all game getting their offense the ball. For Essex they gave it their all freshman Cole Rainer scored a hat trick while Blake McDonald no relation to Holden had a goal while Mount Saint Mary’s Commit Cam Stone also had a goal along with transfer Julian Jackson and Jake Brown, Dylan Bruce. Red shirt freshman Max Edelman made twenty saves while he let in sixteen.
For All Americans, Onondaga was represented by nine players first team-Attack Matt Bennett, Midfield- Sean Ohlhaver, Adam Bomberry, Defense Chandler Allen, Tyson Bell, Oakley Thomas, and Goalie- Holden McDonald. Second team Attack- Brine Rice, Midfield- Kyle Killen. It is also known that Genesee had second team Attack-Jake Bomberry, Midfield Brody Jorgenson, Defense- Reed Hindy. It is know for sure that Nassau had Chris Martinez, Josh Bryne, Shane Deboer, Brandon Wattson and Nick Capuana. making second team as a midfielder.
