NLL Power Rankings Week 5: Black Wolves Jump to Top Spot

black wolves

A lot of action this past weekend, and Colorado, who averages 16 goals a game was held to 10 by the tight defense of the Saskatchewan Rush.

The Georgia Swarm complete a weekend sweep of Toronto (20-17) and Rochester (13-9).

The Black Wolves are top in the East at 3-1 and could have been 4-0 if not for a little lapse in defense versus Calgary. With Shawn Evans on the team, the Black Wolves are definitely a contender for the East Division title.

Meanwhile, the Rock still continue to crumble as they sit at 0-5.

1. (3)  New England Black Wolves  (3-1).

After trailing by two early in the second quarter, New England would outscore Buffalo 10-1 and hold on for a 15-11 victory.  Shawn Evans (2 G, 7 A) and Kevin Crowley (6 G, 1 A) led the way for the Black Wolves.                        Next Game: @ Buffalo  Saturday  7:30 pm.

2. (1)  Colorado Mammoth (4-1).

After averaging 16 goals a game, the Mammoth were held to 10 by the Rush defense. Mammoth held a 10-9 lead early in the fourth until the Rush scored the final three of the game. John Grant Jr., (2 G, 4 A) led the Mammoth. Next Game: @ Vancouver  Saturday  10 pm.

3. (6)  Georgia Swarm  (3-2).

Two games, two victories.  Not just any victories, but divisional ones against the Toronto Rock and Rochester Knighthawks.  First game versus Toronto was a 20-17 shootout.  Then off to Rochester, and without missing a beat they walk out with a 13-9 victory.  Shayne Jackson (14 PTS), Lyle Thompson and Johnny Powless (13 PTS each) led the Swarm.     Next Game:  @ Calgary  Saturday  9 pm.

4. (5)   Saskatchewan Rush  (2-1).

A big home win over the Colorado Mammoth 12-10.  Rush defense was the story in this game by holding the Mammoth to only ten goals, six below their average.  Mark Matthews (4 G, 2 A), and Zack Greer (3 G, 2 A) led the offense.  Aaron Bold stopped 35-45 for the win.                                Next Game:  vs Calgary  Friday  8:30pm.

5. (2)   Rochester Knighthawks  (2-2).

Playing from behind all night is never easy.  This is what Rochester did all game as they fell 13-9 to Georgia. Knighthawks couldn’t take advantage of a team that was in a dog fight the night before.  Craig Point (3 G, 2 A) and Cory Vitarelli (2 G, 1 A) were the only players with multiple goals for Rochester.                                                              Next Game:  vs Vancouver  February 13th  7:30 pm.

6. (4)  Buffalo Bandits  (2-2).

Bandits held an early two goal lead in the second quarter, then the floor caved in as they fell 15-11.  Buffalo would score one time in the next 36-plus minutes, while allowing 10 goals.  They would put a late run together but it was too late.  Dhane Smith (4 G, 5 A) and Ryan Benesch (3 G, 2 A) led the scoring for Buffalo.                                       Next Game:  vs New England   Saturday  7:30 pm.

7. (7)   Calgary Roughnecks  (2-2).

Overcame a one goal deficit to defeat a tough Vancouver team 15-13.  Game was non-stop action on both ends of the floor.  Once again the combination of Curtis Dickson (4 G, 1 A) and Dane Dobbie (3 G, 5 A) led the Calgary offense.  Next Game: @ Saskatchewan  Friday  7:30 pm.

8. (8)  Vancouver Stealth  (1-3).

Would lead 7-6 at the half, this would be their only lead of the game, as they fall to Calgary 15-13.  In the third quarter Vancouver would allow three straight goals before the teams would swap two goal runs to go into the final quarter 11-11.  Rhys Duch (3 G, 5 A), Logan Schuss (5 G, 4 A), and Garrett Billings (2 G, 5 A) led the Stealth offense.  Next Game:  vs Colorado  Saturday  10 pm.

9. (9)  Toronto Rock  (0-5).

Once again the Rock fall, this time 20-17 to Georgia.  Toronto had scored only 25 goals total before this game, but still wasn’t enough.  Toronto would overcome a four goal deficit to take a one goal lead and seemed to have the momentum for their first win. But two goals in 18 seconds put them behind for good.  Only good news for Toronto is Josh Sanderson has been placed on the player evaluation list and could be fully activated before they play again.      Next Game:  @ New England  February 14th  3 pm.
