The Calgary Roughnecks are spending their second weekend of training camp in the Vancouver area as they continue to prepare for the upcoming 2014 season.
In addition to their workout schedule, they’ll be playing a scrimmage against the re-tooled Vancouver Stealth squad on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre.
Both teams are still busy locking down their outstanding free agents—Calgary re-signed defenseman Mike Carnegie to a two-year deal just yesterday—but that means teams will have an opportunity to give newcomers a chance to shine.
The hometown Stealth will be keen to see how high profile acquisition Ilija Gajic and first-round pick Cody Bremner fit into the system.
The Roughnecks, meanwhile, will be putting several new faces to the test. Draft picks Tor Reinholdt, Karsen Leung and Garrett McIntosh are competing for spots on the back end while Darren Kinnear, Colin Hill and Calgary-native Jake Hayes fight for spots up front.
The scrimmage also will be a rematch, of sorts, of the Western Division final from last season where the Stealth eliminated the Roughnecks 14-13. While both teams will be tuning up for the upcoming season, bragging rights will also be on the line. Consequently, the top talent will also get their fair share of playing time in the scrimmage as well.
Look for recently re-signed forwards Rhys Duch, Lewis Ratcliff and Athan Iannucci of the Stealth to be faced up against Carnegie, Geoff Snider and Andrew McBride on one end of the floor while Shawn Evans, Jeff Shattler and Dane Dobbie challenge Kyle Sorensen, Jeff Moleski and Matt Beers on the other.
The game gets underway at 7:00 pm PST in Langley.
