According to Cleveland.com, the Cleveland State Vikings will officially join the ranks of NCAA Division One lacrosse in 2017. It had been widely speculated that the Vikings would become the next D1 team, and they will become the 70th member team.
To make room for the lacrosse team, Cleveland State will end funding of its wrestling program.
Reports of the university adding lacrosse began this fall and it seemed like only a matter of time before it was indeed approved.
The Vikings will be one of the only teams not on the east coast, along with Michigan, Ohio State, Bellarmine, Detroit, and Marist in the mid west along with Denver and Air Force in the west.
In most sports, the Vikings are a member of the Horizon League, the same conference the Detroit Titans are typically in. It remains to be seen which lacrosse conference they join.
