Seven Questions with Curtis Dickson

Yesterday I spoke with WLA leading scorer and Calgary Roughnecks star Curtis Dickson about his season with the Maple Ridge Burrards. Read on for our question and answer.
1. Burrards are in second in the WLA, your thoughts on the season so far?

Apart from a couple of bad stretches in games I think we have played really well. We knew right from the start what we were capable of and are proving to the rest of the league that we are contenders. We’re a good young team and are only going to get better as the season progresses.

2. You lead the league in points by a lot. What’s working for you?

Our offense as a whole has been playing really well all year long. The other guys are giving me opportunities to put the ball in the net and I have been capitalizing so far. It really has been a group effort. Having a legend like John Allen behind the bench giving you pointers doesn’t hurt either.

3. What has made Maple Ridge such a scoring machine?

Consistency. That is something we have lacked the last couple of years and especially now that we have all our guys back in the lineup it has been easier to find that chemistry we have been missing and we have just been meshing great so far.

4. The Burrards roster isn’t filled with NLL “super stars” like some other teams. How is it still working so well?

We have a lot of “roll” players and everyone is playing to their role perfectly so far this season. The unsung heroes like Porter back on defense and the faceoff team are the guys that give us those sparks every night. Also Levy has been great in net for us which is a must in this league if you expect to win.

5. Where do you stand on the issue with the facemasks and the CLA?

I was never a fan of the facemask. Just the look and the feel of it never felt right. Also seeing some of the injuries that came from them riding up players faces were pretty grusome. I think they made the right call  switching back to the old ones for the Senior age players and hopefully they get it right with the rest of the leagues as well.

6. What are your thoughts on the BCJALL possibly leaving the CLA?

I don’t know a whole lot about the situation but it would be sad to see a great tradition such as the minto cup be in jeopardy of happening. Clearly the BCJALL has reasons for doing what they are doing so hopefully it can all  be sorted out without that happening.

7. During WLA season how much fo you think of the off season moves with the Roughnecks?

I’m always staying in touch with the guys and coaches from the Roughnecks. It’s awesome seeing the success our guys are having in the summer seasons. As for moves I don’t anticipate much to happen outside of the draft pickups. We have a great group of core guys that we believe we can win with and just need to step up and perform the way we know we can. We know the coaching staff believes in us and we have the best in the business running our bench so we have all the faith in the world in them as well.
