Smith: Why a Ref?

Each week CLA referee Mark Smith will write a column discussing the world of lacrosse refereeing.

One might ask, why would anyone want to become a referee?

There are many different reasons that make refereeing a rewarding and meaningful activity to do in your spare time. Refereeing is a part-time job, hobby and a great way to give back to the sport. Being an official is a great way to stay involved in the game. Lacrosse is a fast-paced sport which makes refereeing it very fun and interesting.

Refereeing lacrosse is a passion of mine. I am in my eighth season refereeing lacrosse in the Ontario Lacrosse Association (O.L.A.), while also having just completed my first season in the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLAX) as well. I have worked several Ontario Provincial Championships over my career, ranging from Novice to Midget. My goal is to one day be able to work some Major and Junior games in Canada.

We all know that lacrosse is the fastest sport played on two feet, with every play happening in a split-second. Being a referee comes with a great deal of responsibility. The referees are responsible for the safety of everybody involved in the game and must ensure that the game is progressing in a safe and efficient manner. As a referee, you must be able to handle to the pressures of the game and the circumstances that come into play as the game progresses. Referees must have superior communication and interpersonal skills to be able to deal with everyone who is involved in the game.

There is a large amount of criticism that is directed towards referees. No matter what the outcome of the game is, there is always going to be at least one person who criticizes or blames the referee for the outcome of the game. Thick skin is a necessity for a referee, as they cannot be phased by heckling, criticism and comments made from anyone involved in the game. A successful referee is someone who is able to block out all the negativity that is directed towards them and focus solely on the game that is being played.

Refereeing lacrosse can be fast-paced, intense and action-packed, which is what makes it so enjoyable and interesting. Referees are an essential part of the sport that are often underappreciated and disrespected. Without referees, we could not play a lacrosse game which makes them a very valuable asset. They are an essential part of the game and players, coaches and fans need to realize and appreciate how important the referees are to the sport.

The pros heavily outweigh the cons when it comes to refereeing lacrosse, which makes it easier for referees to deal with the criticism and negativity from fans, coaches and players. A successful referee participates for their love of the game and the community, not just for the money and game fees. A true passion for the game is needed to be a successful referee, which translates into their effort and work ethic on the floor. The more you give back to the game as a referee, the more the game will give back to you.
