Calgary Roughnecks: Scott Ranger Moved to Practice Roster

The Calgary Roughnecks have moved forward Scott Ranger to the Practice Roster from their Active Roster and have replaced him with goaltender Pete Dubenski.

At the start of the 2014 campaign, it appeared to be unlikely that Ranger would even play this year, as he was suffering from a jaw injury sustained during the offseason. As noted by Roughnecks head coach Curt Malawsky at the end of December, “He’s on a list to get the surgery done, so he’s basically on the injured reserve…. We’re looking possibly down the end of road near the end of the season, maybe at the trade deadline and I don’t think you’re gonna pick up anyone as good as Scott Ranger at the deadline, so that’s kinda what we’re focussing on.”

Ten days later it was a different story, with the Roughnecks announcing on their website that Ranger had signed on for the remainder of the season and, in fact, he was in the lineup that night against the Colorado Mammoth in a game Calgary won by a 13-11 final score. Ranger contributed a single point to the cause in limited action.

Ranger has subsequently picked up eight points in three games, giving him nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) in four games this year. He is sitting at sixth overall in scoring for Calgary this year.

Adding Dubenski to the roster perhaps suggests that Malawsky wants to put some extra pressure on goalies Mike Poulin (13.44 GAA) and Frankie Scigliano (12.61 GAA), whose performance thus far on the season has been lacklustre, putting them at 14th and 13th respectively out of 16 goalies this year in goals against average.
