Checking in on Penn State Women’s Lacrosse

The Penn State Women’s Lacrosse Team has announced their 2015 spring schedule. This will be the Nittany Lion’s first step into the BIG10 play, and the team, along with Head Coach Missy Doherty, is excited for this level of competition to commence.

Their schedule consists of eight home games and eight away games. They will face other BIG10 Women’s Lacrosse teams in five contests this season as follows:

March 26-29 @ Rutgers
April 2-5 vs. Ohio State
April 9-12 vs. Michigan
April 16-19 @ Northwestern
April 23-26 @ Maryland
April 30-May 3 Big Ten Tournament (@Rutgers)

After a successful fall ball tournament hosted in Happy Valley, the team is gearing up to train hard for their inaugural season in the BIG10. This season, the team will be playing seven matches against teams that they faced in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, so the level of competition will be at an all-time high.

The team will certainly miss the presence of 2014 captain and standout, Lizzy Carney. Carney’s talent on defense will leave a void in the Nittany Lion’s team, but Coach Doherty’s class of seven freshmen will hopefully bring a new dynamic to the team.

The returning playmakers for the 2015 season include senior Tatum Coffey and Maggie McCormick, who are ready to take the lead this season. McCormick, Senior Attacker, and Captain, has been making big contributions since her freshman season, and has increased her goal contributions each season.

Four of the seven newcomers to the team, Katie O’Donnell, Maggie Gallagher, Maggie Kaulius, and McKenna Coyle earned All-American awards during their high school careers.

It’s going to be an interesting first season in the BIG10 for the Nittany Lions, and it will be great to see how their new and returning talent take this team to the next level.
