College Check-Up: Transfers Continue

Hopkins-high-stick

The NCAA season has concluded, but that doesn’t mean teams sit around doing nothing for the summer.  Coaches and players are moving, and recruiting for the future is in full swing as well.  In this edition of College Check-Up, the transfer moves continue.  Until Fall practices start up in late August and early September, I’ll be giving you the latest updates in the world of College Lacrosse on a weekly basis.

Former UMBC Midfielder Pat Young To Transfer; In Admissions Process at Maryland

One developing transfer that many people are following revolves around Pat Young, the former midfield standout at UMBC.  Last week, Ty Xanders tweeted out that he would be transferring to the University of Maryland, while another source said that he is going through the admissions process at the school, according to Inside Lacrosse.  Young recorded 86 goals and 21 assists during his three seasons at UMBC.  If all goes as planned, he would come at a great time, as he might be replacing the spot that Joe LoCascio had last season.  He had a down season with 21 goals and eight assists last season after receiving American East First Team honors in 2014.  A new team might help Young play to his potential that the AE saw in 2013 and 2014.

Former UMass Goaltender Zach Oliveri To Play Final Year Of Eligibility At Stony Brook

This is the first official transfer of the summer, as Stony Brook announced the move early this week.  Oliveri graduated from UMass this year, but redshirted his freshman year, meaning that he has one more year left of eligibility.  The goaltender provides a need for the Sea Wolves, as three goalies combined for a .434 save percentage in 2015.  And with eight starters and 30 letterwinners returning next year plus the addition of Oliveri and no more Lyle Thompson, it’s looking like Stony Brook is the early favorite to win the American East.

Former Syracuse Goaltender Parker Ferrigan Moves On To Delaware

Syracuse had a ton of goalies this season, which included Bobby Wardwell and Warren Hill.  Ferrigan was the 4th string goaltender behind Evan Molloy, and decided that it was time for a change that was tough for him, but also a change that he needed, which came from an email sent to the entire team.  Ferrigan is a former Under Armour All-American and redshirted his freshman year in 2014.  Delaware brings back Conor Peaks, who has started 27 career games, to compete for the starting job with Ferrigan.

Graduated Defenseman Rob Enright Not Returning To Johns Hopkins

With graduation over and a job at Barclays Bank already set up, former Blue Jay defenseman Rob Enright will not be back at Johns Hopkins for another season.  He suffered a season-ending knee injury in the team’s 13-11 loss at North Carolina on February 21, and could have applied for a medical redshirt to regain a year of eligibility.  With that news, only Nick Fields returns as the only starting close defenseman from last year.  Junior Eddie Morris could replace Enright, as he is rehabbing from his own season-ending knee injury.

Finally, this would be the section about something that I would preview for the week ahead.  Unfortunately, there is nothing to watch for the incoming week.  The closest event that I am focusing on is the Under Armour All-American Game and the Underclassmen and Uncommitted games and tournaments July 4th weekend in Towson.  Plenty of college commits from all over the nation will be at this event.
