College “Fall Ball” Classics to Look For

September 30th, 2012— Lacrosse is still a long way behind sports such as football in the line of American sports powerhouses, but there is no doubt advantages to lacrosse. Football plays only in the fall, making fans and youth players transition to other sports throughout the rest of the year. Youth players in lacrosse get to attend summer camps at high-profile colleges, travel in the fall, expose themselves to a new dimension of the game in the winter, while giving their all in the ever-busy spring season for their respective middle and high schools. Forget players though, it’s the fans that keep the game alive, what do they get? In the winter, when the NHL is locked out, fans are treated to a big-hitting, quick paced indoor  game thanks to the NLL and/or PLL. Every spring, lacrosse fans are able to go out and support their local high school and college teams, getting to show their real school spirit. In the summer, Major League Lacrosse headlines the high-octane part of the game, with two point shots and colorful personalities owning the All-Star Game freestyle competitions. While many consider fall to be the only “dead” season of the year for lacrosse, fall still poses great things. Travel teams are soaking in the last of bit of warm weather in the year, while college teams at every level are staying busy, scheduling exhibition games that often feature powerhouses or external division play. Last year, the treat of the fall was seeing Virginia come out with a narrow win over D-III powerhouse, Lynchburg. What will it be this year that keeps us lacrosse fans at the edge of our seats? On October 6th, everyone gets a sneak peek of first year D-1 team, High Point (NC) against Colgate in the Nicholas Collelouri Fall Classic. On the same day, you can see Hofstra against up and rising Villanova. With a busy schedule, here is your list of games and events to keep an eye out for.

Boiardi Foundation Capital Lacrosse Classic: Landon School – Bethesda, MD (October 7th)

People can’t help but wonder how big lacrosse would be if it expanded to the west coast. On October 21st, top D-I teams can play a big role in growing the game in the “San Francisco Lacrosse Classic.”

No matter where you live, traveling to Maryland might be your best chance at seeing four top tier D-I teams play in just one day. Cornell, Penn State, Johns Hopkins, and UNC-Chapel Hill all highlight the day, playing two games each. Want to be the first one to see how Rob Pannell rebounds this year? He’ll be playing his two games against the rough defenses of Hopkins and Chapel Hill.

Navy @ Notre Dame (October 13th)

Lacrosse growing in South Bend? We all need to check this out.

Maryland Vs. Denver: Seatown Classic in Tukwila, WA (October 13th)

Both teams made it farther than anyone would have predicted in last year’s NCAA tournament with their powerful offensive potential, what will this year hold? Fans on the west coast may be the first to find out.
