Fall Ball Check In: Stony Brook

This upcoming season for the Stony Brook Sea Wolves looks like a promising one. Last season ended on a disappointing note for the Sea Wolves on an overtime thriller against the Albany Great Danes. The Sea Wolves have been young on the field the last couple of seasons but they have many key returners who have had plenty of game time experience.

Mike Rooney is a player to watch out for; he’s been the guy since day one at Stony Brook. The attack man had 58 points last year and he always is getting teammates involved look for the senior to have a great final year.

Challen Rogers is the best known midfielder for the Sea Wolves; he tallied 55 points last season this is great production out of a midfielder. The western Canada native had an excellent summer with the Jr.A Coquitlam Adanacs reaching all the way to the Minto Cup but falling shy to the Six Nation Arrows. Coach Nagle is going to put most of the weight on Rogers shoulder to get that production out of the midfielder for the spring season.

In the net for the Sea Wolves this season will be Hayden Johnstone. The sophomore will be coming back from an ok freshmen season. Just like before Coach Nagle has faith in the young guns and having that game experience will help the team Overall, I expect to see more of a leadership role for Johnstone with commanding the defense and hopefully gets to that .500% percentage. If he plays big then the overall team will play big and step up as well.

I will be exciting to see what the Sea Wolves can accomplish this season. They were a game away from the American East championship last year; let’s see if they can go further than that this season. My biggest concern is the defense which gave up an average of 12 goals a game last year. If they can develop and work together as a cohesive group they can do great things as a team.

Key games will definitely be when they play the Albany Great Danes. Yes, Albany loses two of the Thompsons, but the leader in points last season Lyle Thompson does return for his senior year.
