This match up was a showcase of the Thompson Trio and Loyola’s struggles to find offensive opportunities.
Albany took the lead early, commanding 2-0.
Then, at 2:30 in the first, Loyola finally answered back when #34 Pat Laconi found the back of the net. Albany called a timeout.
2:04 in the first brought a goal by Jon Newhouse to make it 3-1 over Loyola. That would be Newhouse’s only goal on the day.
With 11 minutes left in the first half, Myles Thompson made a sick goal, extending the score to 4-1. He immediately went back-to-back, scoring again at 6:51 to make it 5-1, and recording his third goal of the day.
A few moments later, we saw some light out of the Greyhounds. At 6:30, #10 Blaze Riorden connected with the cage making it 5-2, which was followed by a goal from Nikko Pontrello closing the score within two, 5-3 Albany hanging over Loyola. Both goals were unassisted.
The half would close that way.
In the third quarter, Myles and Ty Thompson connected at 12:11 to extend the lead to 8-3. The Great Danes would continue to extend their command to nine at 8:48 in the third.
Loyola responded at 3:02 with a goal as the skies became heavily overcast and wind picked up. 9-4 Albany.
A severe weather storm and lightning were reported, game was delayed and the heavens opened up down pouring on the stadium.
Play resumes: Albany made it 10-5 by #91 Ty Thompson who was assisted by Lyle.
Jack Runkel made a killer save for Loyola on the next fast break from Albany, and the Greyhounds called a timeout with 9:17 left in regulation.
The next play, Albany stole the ball back, and the Thompsons were able to toy with Runkel. They pulled him 15 feet from the cage and dumped the ball in. 11-5.
Lyle then assisted Ty AGAIN at 1:46 to extend to 13-6, which would be the final statement.
Referees made questionable calls all day, and Albany made fools of Loyola. The Greyhounds did manage to stay composed, but nothing they attempted worked against the Native Americans.
