Mike Lum-Walker is known around the lacrosse community as a big body defender but on Monday night at the NLL draft, he felt like a little boy again. The Whitby Warrior product was selected 20th overall by his hometown team, the Toronto Rock. For many Ontario born players, the Rock’s dynasty during the 2000’s was the reason why they picked up the stick. If Lum-Walker can crack the Toronto roster, he will bring his tough, in your face style of defense to the Rock.
Q: It’s obviously an honor to get drafted into the NLL, but how does it feel to get drafted to your hometown team ?
A. Getting drafted by the Toronto Rock is a dream come true. Growing up going to all their games, seeing them win championships. It is surreal.
Q: Does this come as a shock? Or were you contacted by the Rock before the draft?
A: I had been in contact with the Rock before the draft. It is still a shock to get drafted to them. Best feeling going to the hometown team.
Q: What can you bring to the Rock to help their success?
A: I will be bringing the aggressive, tough defense that I have been working really hard on for the last few years. Being able to defend my teammates is something that I pride myself. I know my role as a intense defender and I want that to translate into my game as I move to the next step.
Q: What are your plans from now until training camp?
4. My plans from now until camp is train, train and train. I want to improve my speed and power. Looking forward to the challenge.
