MSL Rookie Report: Powless Shines

msl

1. Johnny Powless – Six Nations Chiefs
A notable omission from the Week 3 MSL Rookie Report, as Johnny Powless has already won back to back Mann Cups with the Six Nations Chiefs. However with that being said, he is still technically a rookie in the MSL this season, yet has been producing like the veteran he is. With no Cody Jamieson on the left side of the Chiefs offence this summer, Powless and veteran Jeff Shattler have been the go-to guys thus far. This past week of play saw Powless see three games of action, kicking it off with a home and home against the Peterborough Lakers, before dumping the Brooklin Redmen on the road. In those three games Powless tallied six goals and four assists for 10 points.

2. Turner Evans – Peterborough Lakers
This past week Evans began to look much more comfortable as a regular on the left side of the Peterborough Lakers offense. While his touches are limited due to the abundance of talent the Lakers have up front, Evans has been making an impact whenever he gets the opportunity. Like Powless, Evans has seen action in the MSL prior to this season as a Junior aged call up, however he to is still considered a rookie, despite playing more like a seasoned vet. This past week in three games of action, Evans racked up two goals and five assists for seven points.

3. Dan Lomas – Oakville Rock
Dan Lomas continues to produce for the Oakville Rock, despite being arguably their fifth option on the offensive attack. Toiling on the left side of the Rock’s offense with veteran Stephan LeBlanc and the recently acquired Jordan Critch, Lomas currently sits third in team scoring behind only Stephan LeBlanc and Rob Hellyer, with 18 points. Unlike Evans, Lomas does get his fair share of touches within the Rock offense, as Oakville shares the ball tremendously well on offense. It would be unfair to expect Lomas to rack up the points the way Powless does, as he simply doesn’t get enough touches, however this past week Lomas went on to record two goals and four assists for six points in big wins for the Oakville Rock.

4. Reilly O’Connor – Brooklin Redmen
This past week Reilly O’Connor and the Brooklin Redmen saw action on Wednesday and Thursday night, dropping a game to the very tough Six Nations Chiefs, before picking up a huge win against the Brampton Excelsiors. In those two match ups O’Connor netted a goal and an assist in each game, giving him four points for the week. However O’Connor continues to look more and more comfortable within the Redmen offense, as he has began to show the vision and playmaking ability that netted him three consecutive 100 point seasons as a member of the Whitby Warriors. It’s only a matter of time before O’Connor really breaks out this season.

5. Bryan Cole – Oakville Rock
Bryan Cole continues to rack up the points in transition for the Oakville Rock, as he he picked up two goals and three assists for five points this past week in Oakville’s two victories over teams their sitting right behind in the MSL standings. Cole has made a seamless transition from the Junior ranks, as the big bodied, physical transition player continues to push the pace in possession, and finish when given the opportunity. Cole has been impactful for the Rock in every game he’s played this season, and should only continue to improve as the season wares on.
